Soule Caster Bed
This bed is based upon a Shaker original depicted in "The Complete Book of Shaker Furniture" by Timothy D. Rieman & Jean M. Burks, and has a peculiar story behind it. A few years back, a client of ours with the last name "Soule" came into our showroom with the aforementioned book, and asked us to reproduce it for them. "Soule" happens to be a name that appears in Shaker history, thus the name we gave it. We were told there was no known relationship to the client.
A curious design detail that the Shakers incorporated into this bed is the use of left to right rolling casters at the base of each post which enabled the bed to be moved for easy cleaning & the replacing of bed sheets.
Construction details include full mortise & tennon construction for superior strength, reproduction brass bolt-covers, and a box-platform that is used in place of a boxspring to provide the lower mattress height of the original bed that had a rope support system.
The example is shown in a twin size, finished in our Painted Museum Finish "Green over Red",
